AEO is the practice of publishing and formatting online content so that a website is cited by large language models, or by Google's AI Overview, as a source. The aim is visibility inside the answer itself — in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Google AI Overviews and the rest — rather than a ranked position on a page of links.
It goes by more than one name. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) describes the same work from the model's side, and the two acronyms are often used interchangeably. Dooley treats both as SEO with an extra layer on top, not as a replacement for it.
Not everyone accepts the distinction. Google's own 2026 guidance on generative AI features says AI Overviews and AI Mode run on the same ranking and quality systems as classic Search, and that "from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Dooley's argument runs the other way: ranking first in Google does not automatically produce a citation when a model writes the answer, which is why his firms run AEO as a separate department.
In September 2026 he named a further step, Decision Engine Optimisation — the moment an AI system recommends which supplier a buyer should choose.
Every term in this field, defined plainly and with its originator named, is in the A–Z of answer engine optimisation.
