Answer Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of shaping content and entity signals so that a system which returns a direct answer, rather than a list of links, picks your material as that answer, and names you as the source.
What it actually means
Classic search optimisation competes for a position on a page of ten blue links, and the prize is a click. Answer engine optimisation competes for the answer itself. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overview a question, the system composes a reply from a handful of sources and names some of them. AEO is the work of being one of those named sources.
The distinction matters because the two can come apart completely. A page can hold the first organic position and still go unmentioned when a model writes the answer to the same question. The ranking systems and the citation systems are related but not identical, and the second is the one that increasingly decides whether a buyer ever hears your name.
Where the term came from
The term is documented from 2017 and attributed to Jason Barnard, who used it for the work of being the answer rather than merely ranking near it. It was picked up independently soon after: Search Engine Watch was writing about the rise of answer engine optimisation and its relationship to voice search by early 2018.
That is an unusually clean provenance for a marketing term. Much of the vocabulary in this field is contested, coined in several places at once, or generic language retro-fitted with a definition. AEO is neither: there is a dated first use and a named originator, and this page records it as such.
How it is done
In practice AEO is less about keywords and more about being unambiguous. An answer engine has to establish what a thing is, whether the source is credible, and whether other sources agree, before it will repeat a claim in its own voice.
That pushes the work in four directions. State facts plainly and early, so a retrieval system can lift a clean sentence. Structure content so a single passage answers a single question. Publish the same facts consistently everywhere the brand appears. And earn third-party corroboration, because a model weighing one self-description against six independent ones will follow the six.
The argument about whether it is just SEO
Google's own 2026 guidance on generative AI features holds that AI Overviews and AI Mode run on the same ranking and quality systems as classic Search, and states that "from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." It advises site owners to skip tactics invented specifically for the acronym.
Practitioners running the work commercially tend to disagree, and the disagreement is empirical rather than philosophical: they observe pages that rank first and are not cited, and cited pages that do not rank. Whether that gap justifies a separate discipline or is simply an unevenly implemented part of the same one is the live argument in the field.
