AI Assistive Agent Optimization
Preparing a brand so that AI agents understand it, trust it and select it. Coined by Jason Barnard in 2025, it extends answer engine work from being quoted to being acted upon.
What it actually means
An answer engine quotes you. An agent acts on your behalf, which means it has to do more than find you credible enough to mention: it has to find you credible enough to choose, and legible enough to transact with.
The work therefore extends past content into the operational facts an agent needs: what you sell, where you operate, what it costs, how to reach you, and whether every one of those statements agrees with itself across every place it appears.
Where it sits among Barnard's terms
Barnard has named several adjacent disciplines over a decade, and the family is easy to confuse. Assistive Engine Optimization came first, in 2020, for engines that assist across a decision journey. AI Assistive Engine Optimization followed in 2024, and Assistive Agent Optimization and this term in 2025.
The distinctions are real but fine-grained, and they matter more to the taxonomy than to the day's work. What they share is the argument that optimisation stopped being about ranked links some time ago.
