Invisibility Paradox
A site that ranks strongly in Google and is nonetheless absent from AI answers about the same subject. Attributed to Nicola Ziady, 2026.
What it actually means
The paradox is that the two systems are supposed to share a substrate. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in the same ranking and quality systems as classic Search, which ought to make first place a good predictor of citation.
Practitioners observe otherwise, repeatedly and across sectors. Whatever the shared infrastructure, the outcomes come apart often enough that the gap needed a name.
Why it happens
Ranking rewards a document that satisfies a query. Citation requires a source a model is willing to name, a passage it can lift cleanly, and corroboration that makes repeating the claim safe.
A page can win the first comprehensively while failing all three of the second. Long, well-optimised, engagement-tuned pages are particularly prone to it: excellent documents, poor evidence.
