Reasoning Web
A view of the web as structured evidence and relationships that AI systems can reason over, rather than a set of pages to retrieve. Named by Andrea Volpini in 2025.
What it actually means
The document web was built for humans, with machines reading it by inference. The semantic web proposed making meaning explicit and largely failed to get adopted. The reasoning web is the argument that AI has made the semantic case commercially, where standards bodies could not.
The claim is that publishing explicit facts and relationships is now self-interested rather than altruistic, because systems that reason over structure will favour sources that supply it.
Whether it is happening
The evidence is mixed and worth stating as such. Structured data demonstrably helps machines resolve entities. Whether generative systems reason over relationships in the strong sense, or pattern-match over text that happens to be well organised, is unsettled.
The practical advice survives either answer, which is a good sign for the advice and an honest caveat about the theory.
